Snack Ideas When Camping with the Family

May 12, 2018 by Dave Witzel

snackYou’ll be burning lots of energy and that requires lots of snacks. If you are trying to watch the sugar and expense there are a lot of tasty treats you can make at home and bring with you. We found 25 recipes to get you started. You’re sure to find something that will please your crew.

This Chili-Corn Snack Mix is a spicy blend of high fiber cereal, almonds, corn nuts, some dried fruit, pretzel knots, spices and lime juice. With 3 grams of fiber per 1/2 cup serving it will satisfy your desire to crunch on something and has a zippy flavor to boot.

Crunch-Crunch-Crunch Mix. One of the ingredients in this blend is Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal which is known for its high fiber content. The rest of the mix is made up of dried cherries, some whole grain cereal and roasted nuts. It’s a very healthy mix. Each 1/2 cup serving has 3.3 grams of fiber and only 119 calories.

Spiced Glazed Nuts & Pretzels. These are sweetened with maple syrup and dark brown sugar. They are spiced with red pepper powder or chile and cinnamon. They are made up of assorted nuts, sea salt and pretzel twists. Just the right salty-sweet something when you want it. The grown ups will probably hide them from the kids and keep them for themselves.

Caramel Apple Popcorn. You’ll be flavoring your popcorn with vanilla, cinnamon, toffee bits, dried apple, nuts, and baking staples to create a new kind of popcorn the kids will go crazy for. It takes about 10 minutes to make and you’re ready to serve.

You can see all the recipes at the link below. If you have a favorite snack that you alway bring to camp we would love to hear about it.

Potluck Recipes You’ll Love

February 4, 2017 by Dave Witzel

PotluckCamping is a time for potlucks. Whether it is a potluck that is hosted by the campground or one within your group, having new recipes that are easy to prepare is always handy.

This Cheesy Brat Stew Casserole, from Midwest Living, is quick and easy to make. The basic ingredients are favorites and you probably have them on hand. Just 20 minutes of prep time and you are good to go. You can get the recipe here http://www.midwestliving.com/recipe/cheesy-brat-stew-casserole-1/

An Italian Basil Pasta Salad would taste fresh and fabulous at your next potluck. It would be easy to make from your campsite and can be assembled in 30 minutes prep time. Be sure to give it time to chill beforehand. You can find the recipe here http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/italian-basil-pasta-salad

How about a BLT Pasta Salad? It doesn’t seem you could go wrong with anything BLT, right? This needs to be made ahead of time in order for the flavors to really reach their peak. Grab some tomatoes, lettuce, bacon, ranch dressing, and some onion for a popular favorite dish. You can read how simple it is to put together here http://allrecipes.com/recipe/72823/blt-pasta-salad/?internalSource=staff%20pick&referringId=16593&referringContentType=recipe%20hub

Leave it to Martha Stewart to share a winner. How about a Pound Cake Tiramisu? With some simple substitutions you have a delicious dessert that can be made ahead of time in just fifteen minutes or so. You swap out the lady fingers with pound cake and then brush it with coffee and tiny bit of rum. We think it sounds fabulous. You can see the recipe here http://www.marthastewart.com/336470/pound-cake-tiramisu

Potlucks are a natural extension of camping with people spending time together and enjoying each others company. We hope your next potluck is wonderful and that one of these recipes made getting ready for the potluck an easy process.

Protecting Your Camping Gear From Mildew

October 29, 2016 by Dave Witzel

camping mildewCamping good weekend fun to many and some consider it a lifestyle. Either way, you want to protect your camping gear from damage and keeping it mildew free is the first place to start. Dew and humidity can play a big part in giving mildew a strong start so we are offering some tips for keeping it at bay.

The best way to prevent mildew is with sunshine and air flow. There is nothing that mildew likes better than a tightly closed up area in which to grow. You can use the sunny days for airing out your sleeping bags and other gear. Drape the items over chairs or lay them flat on the grass, flipping them regularly, to soak up the sun’s rays and be dried with a nice breeze.

Take care with your wet towels and damp clothing. Don’t leave them on the floor or closely packed together. Dry them after each use and you should be able to enjoy them for many years to come. If mold does have a chance to take hold you can kill it with a few remedies. Adding lemon juice and water to a spray bottle is effective and will smell nicer than a bleach solution would. There are some commercial solvents that will work as well.

The best way to fight mold is to prevent it from taking root in the first place. We hope you enjoy your camping stay with us and that your camping equipment remains strong and untouched by mildew.
